While there’s no official title for the free content update, one of the more notable additions to Days Gone is the introduction of a new Survival difficulty. While tougher enemies are a common feature whenever a harder difficulty is introduced, its the removal of the game’s fast-travel system that makes these changes more significant. Given the world of Days Gone is fairly large and frequently sees enemy patrols and freaker hordes trying to ambush main character Deacon St. John while traveling, this further amplifies how much tougher the new difficulty level could be for players.

Survival difficulty also brings with it a new immersive HUD option. The changes to the HUD involves disabling the player’s ability to scan and outline enemies, and will no longer display the game’s map radar unless survival vision is activated. This will prove to make stealth much more difficult, given the inability to mark enemies is designed to create more tension while trying to sneak around areas with Deacon.

Apart from the main story, there are 12 new challenges for players to try out starting later this month, and are categorized between hordes, combat, and bike. There will be one new challenge available each week, and with online leaderboards being implemented for each challenge, the entire summer will have something to offer for the more competitive player base of Days Gone. As players earn better scores in the week’s respective challenge, they’ll receive in-game rewards such as new bike and character skins, new patches that increase Deacon’s stats, and new rings which improve weapon stats. If players replay challenges after unlocking rings, they’ll receive scoring modifiers in certain challenges. Stat boosts from rings do not carry over into the main game, however stat boosts from patches will.

With a steady stream of content coming over the next few months, plus the roughly 30 hour story length of Days Gone, now seems like a great time to pick up the game for those who’ve been on the fence about doing so. In addition to the newest free update, Sony’s Days of Play Sale is live as of yesterday and runs until June 17th, with Days Gone being discounted at $40. Given how quickly this price cut is just weeks after release, there’s much for players to look forward to in the zombie-infested world of Days Gone.

Days Gone is available exclusively on PlayStation 4.
