The 2016 Days Gone gameplay reveal featured the biker protagonist on the run from an enormous horde of zombies. That amount of enemies seemed insane and it definitely made the scale of the game’s encounters feel like a very new approach for the survival horror/adventure genres. As it turns out, that may have been a special set of circumstances.
Here’s a look at the 2016 horde encounter…
Game Rant caught up with a source close to Days Gone at E3 today and discussed the differences in sizes between last year’s gameplay reveal and the smaller hordes featured in the 2017 gameplay trailer. It turns out that the massive horde of ‘freakers’ featured in 2016 was a part of an endgame scenario that is meant to be particularly intense and challenging. During an average gameplay session throughout the campaign, players are much more likely to interact with the smaller hordes like the ones found in yesterday’s footage.
Here is the 2017 footage…
Considering how insane that 2016 sequence was, it makes a lot more sense that the particular encounter was a special circumstance. The game still looks fantastic and although the average scope of each encounter may be smaller than we were originally led to believe, the gameplay still looks unique and challenging. The survival genre is currently full of games that give players the chance to shoot or stab their way through every encounter, so have a game that encourages hiding and escape should make for a nice change of pace.
