There was better news in ladies moguls where a strong run by Ning Qin in the second round of qualification saw her win a place in the final. The 22-year-old finished in 18th position overall, making her Canadian coach “extremely happy”, according to his pre-race hopes last week. Canadian sisters Justine (19) and Chloe (22) Dufour-Lapointe won gold and silver respectively, while a third sister Maxine (24) was 12th.

Li Hongxue finished 50th out of 61 competitors in the ladies skiathlon cross-country event, while Ren Long beat a Spaniard by a fraction of a second to come 83rd out of 87 racers in the men’s biathlon sprint 10 km. Norway won both events. Elsewhere the Dutch swept the medals in the men’s 5,000m speed skating, while American Sage Kotsenburg won the men’s slopestyle final.

Day 2 preview

Not a whole basket of hope for China on Day 2 either, where Xu Wenlong will compete in the men’s biathlon and four Chinese women will race in the biathlon 7.5 km sprint, but things will get better on Monday when short track starts.
