New Orleans had considered shutting down the 25-year-old star for the rest of the season after he asked to be traded.
But, the team did not move Davis before Thursday’s deadline and general manager Dell Demps announced he would play again in 2018-19.
“Anthony made it clear to us that he wants to play and he gives our team the best opportunity to win games,” Demps said in a statement.
“Moreover, the Pelicans want to preserve the integrity of the game and align our organisation with NBA policies.
“We believe Anthony playing upholds the values that are in the best interest of the NBA and its fans. We look forward to seeing Anthony in a Pelicans uniform again soon.”
NBA executives were worried about Davis being forced to sit out by New Orleans in this situation, according to a report from ESPN, which cited unidentified league sources.
Davis told New Orleans he would not sign an extension in late January. The Los Angeles Lakers made multiple offers for Davis, including one which featured two first-round picks and several players, but ultimately no deal was reached.
Davis also reportedly informed New Orleans he would be willing to consider signing long-term with the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks but he is planning to test free agency in 2020, according to the New York Times.
The five-time All-Star has missed the Pelicans’ last nine games with a finger injury, though he reportedly has been healthy enough to play this week. New Orleans decided not to play him before the trade deadline.
The Pelicans will host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.
