The former Everton boss has overseen a poor start to his tenure at the Old Trafford helm with The Red Devils languishing in seventh place in the league following a dramatic 2-2 draw with Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

Although the campaign has largely been a disappointment, Moyes believes the task of replacing Ferguson was always going to be a long term project rather than a quick fix.

“I was given a six-year contract. Things were always going to take time. There has been rebuilding going on here year after year and we’ll continue to do that,” Moyes said.

However, few within the club’s hierarchy would have foreseen such a dramatic slump in fortunes and while failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League is not disastrous, it could still affect finances. But Moyes is not worried that he will not receive adequate support from United as he attempts to rectify the poor results on the pitch.

“The support has been fantastic. The right clubs pick the right managers and the right managers pick the right club. I always hoped Manchester United would come looking for me and they did in the end. The support doesn’t surprise me,” he declared.

With £60 million spent on Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini Moyes is likely to have to plough further funds into his squad in the summer, while the club’s hierarchy may not be so forgiving if United find themselves out of the top four next season too.
