Manchester United were thrashed 4-1 by cross town rivals City after convincing victories against Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen.

City bested United with Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero, who scored a brace, finding the back of the net.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored a consolation goal for the visitors through an incredible free kick, going on to become the highest scorer in the history of the Manchester Derby. But that was not enough to encourage the Red Devils against City who are now placed third in the league behind Arsenal and Tottenham while United occupy the eighth spot in the table.

The opening games against Chelsea, Liverpool and City were difficult for Moyes who has made no secret of his displeasure.

“The start to the season could be a lot better,” said Moyes.“We did say it could be difficult start. I wasn’t convinced when the balls came out of the Premier League bag and I’m still not convinced.”

The Red Devils now face rivals Liverpool in the Capital One Cup clash on Wednesday and must put the defeat at the hands of City behind them if they want to overcome the Merseyside club.

Striker Robin Van Persie, who missed the derby with a groin injury, may return for the game against Liverpool who will be boosted with the comeback of Luis Suarez.

“Obviously you miss Robin Van Persie, he would be a huge miss to anyone,” said Moyes.

The 50-year-old has faith in his team and is confident of them returning to their winning ways.

“If ever there was a group of players I would expect (a reaction from after a defeat), it is the Manchester United players,” said Moyes. “They react and that is what they will do.

“Every manager has bad days and bad results. I am no different. I have been here (at the Etihad) with Everton many times and I don’t think I suffered a defeat like this with Everton.

“I talked with the players the same as I would at any other clubs. They are good pros here and they know when they are bang at it and when they are not.”

The Scot heaped praise on Wayne Rooney who has scored four goals in three games for United.

“Wayne Rooney was outstanding,” said Moyes. “He didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. He was first class.”
